In relation to hearing loss, captions are text that supplements spoken words. Words often referred to in captioning are “automatic speech recognition (ASR,)” “closed captions,” open captions,” and “CART” (communication access real-time translation.) ASR is captions generated by software interpreting speech. Closed captions are captions that can be turned on and off and are often seen on television and videos. Open captions are always viewable to everyone. CART is captioning using a stenographer in real-time or live. CART captions may be open or closed.
